The line graph illustrates changes in the number of three type of crime – car theft, house burglary, and street robbery – between 1979 and 2005, measured in millions.
Overall, car theft was consistently the most common crime, while street robbery remained the least frequent throughout the period.
Car theft rose steadily from about 0.4 million in 1970 to 1 million in 1990, before peaking at approximately 1.6 million in 1995. After that, it declined gradually, reaching around 1 million again by 2005.
House burglary also increased from 0.2 million in 1970 to about 0.7 million in 1990, where it remained stable until 1995, then fell to roughly 0.5 million by the end of the period. In contrast, street robbery stayed low and relatively stable until 1995, after which it increased slightly to about 0.2 million in 2005.
