The line graph shows how many people visited the UK and how many UK residents travelled abroad between 1979 and 1999. The bar chart gives information about five countries that were the most popular destinations for UK residents in 1999. The numbers are given in millions.
Overall, both visits to and from the UK went up over the period, but the number of people from the UK travelling abroad was always higher than the number of visitors coming to the UK. France was the country that attracted the biggest number of UK tourists in 1999.
In 1979, around 10 million people from the UK went abroad, while about 11 million foreign visitors came to the UK. After that, both numbers increased, but much faster for UK residents. By 1999, about 55 million UK people travelled abroad, compared to nearly 25 million visitors to the UK.
As for the bar chart, France was clearly the most popular destination, with about 12 million UK visitors. Spain was the second most visited, with around 9 million. The USA, Greece, and Turkey followed with smaller numbers, between about 2 and 4 million each.
