Overall, there was an increase in the number of travels to and from the UK over the 20-year period, with the figure for visits out of the country witnessing a dramatic rise. In addition, France and Spain were preferred most by travellers from the UK in the year 1999 while Turkey was the least common.
Looking at the line graph, around 15 million local visitors went abroad from the UK in 1979, with a subsequent slight growth to 20 million over the following 6 years, and a considerable rise to nearly 54 million at the end of the period. According to the bar chart, France was by far the most popular country of these five countries for British to travel to in 1999, with nearly 11 million visitors in that year. The second common destination was Spain, which was visited by almost 9 million UK residents.
