Overall, it is clear that both physical size and the population of the city of Alexandria presented an upward trend. Notably, the city of Alexandria experienced the largest expand in 1900; and it showed the sharp increase of physical size over the period. Besides, the population reached the highest figure in 1980.
Firstly, in 1840, the the city of Alexandria was just 4 kilometers square and located at the centre of the map. In 1900, it experienced the most significant expand, it expand to the big area on the East and the small land at the bottom corner on the West. In 1960, it continuously expand the area to the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. And in 1980, it expand to the area at the Lake Marriout side. In final, the physical size of the city of Alexandria increased totally 96 kilometers square over years, from 4 kilometers square in 1840 to 100 kilometers square in 1980.
Besides the physical size, the city of Alexandria’s size also showed the rapid rise. The number of inhabitants increased gradually from 1840 to 1960, increasing from approximately thousands citizens to about 2 millions citizens. Not only that, the number of inhabitants between 1960 and 1980 experienced the rapid upward trend, increasing from 2 millions in 1960 to over 3 millions inhabitants in 1980.
