The two pie charts below illustrate the percentage of water consumption for domestic purposes between 1988 and 2008.
Overall, water usage for all five categories decreased, except for the bathroom kitchen, whose figures increased over the period. Additionally, whereas garden use experienced a substantial decrease, kitchen use rose sharply to become the biggest category in 2008.
Looking first at the categories with increased data, the bathroom commenced the period with 22%, far exceeding that of the kitchen, with the figure of 15%. After 2 decades, the proportion of water consumption for the bathroom rose slightly to 28%, while the figure for the kitchen climbed significantly to 29%, nearly doubling its initial point, making it the largest share in the latter year.
Turning to the remaining categories, the percentages of water consumption for washing and toilets were initially 25% and 18%, respectively, before seeing a gradual decline to 22% and 14%, in that order. Meanwhile, the figure for gardens dropped dramatically from 20% in 1988 to just 7% in 2008, falling to nearly a third, positioning it as the lowest share in Australia after 2 decades.
