Overall, the city became much larger in size, spreading mainly
Along the coast around Lake Marriout. At the same time, the population increased gradually, before rose in 1960.
In 1840, the town only covered about 4 kilometer square and was located close to the coast. By 1900, the city grew a little to west and south, but it have not change very much. In 1960, the area was larger, extending more far along the Mediterranean Sea. The biggest expanded happen in 1980, when the city reach to around 100 kilometers square, and it spread around the Lake Marriout area which before very small.
The population were increasing slow from 1840 to around 1920, and it do not go above 1 million. After this time, the inhabitant number start to rose more steady, but still not very quickly. However, after 1960 the population grown very dramatic and reach almost to 3.5 million in 1980. This showed that the city was became much more crowded at the end of the period.
