The two charts demonstrate the growth in term of its size and population of the Egyptian city of Alexandria between 1840 and 1980. Overall, it is clear that the city became much larger during the period, and its population also increased, especially after 1940. At the beginning, Alexandria was only a small coastal town, but by 1980 it had expanded widely in all direction.
The map showed the city in 1840, the city covered a very small area about four square kilometers. By 1990, it had grown slightly to the East and South, but the development was limited. In 1960, the city had expanded much more, spreading to Lake Marriout. By 1980, Alexandria had reached about 100 kilometers square in total, showed a major growth compared with the beginning.
In contrast, the line chart followed a similar trend. From 1840 to 1990, the number of people stayed low, at under half a millions. Afterthat, it rose significantly and reached a peak of three millions at the end of the period.
