The two maps illustrate the changes were made to an active mining area, following a redevelopment, which turned it into a tourist destination.
Overall, the area underwent significant renovation, with most of industrial facilities phased to and replaced by a wide range recreational facilities serving visitors.
Before the redevelopment, the mining site included serveral facilities for workers, such as an office, a staff changing room, and a car park located on the left side. In the middle, there was an entrance to underground mine, with a medical room placed next to it, while on the right-hand side, two large waste tips occupied most of the area. A lorry car park was positioned at the bottom of the map.
Following the redevelopment, the whole area was converted into a tourist attraction. The former office and staff changing room were coverted into a museum, while the car park remained unchanged. In the middle, the entrance still located in its former location but was redesigned for visitors. The medical room and the lorry park were demolished, making way for a new café and a souvenir shop. Notably, two waste tips were cleared to make way for a picnic area and a digger driving track on the top of the layout. A children’s play are were also added in the southeasten corner of the map, and a footpath was introduced to facilitate pedestrian movement across the site.
