The given maps illustrate the transformation that a town named Willington experienced during the years 1780, 1860 and 2000.
Overall, comparing the maps, we can notice that the town converted a lot during 220 years period. On the other hand, it is obvious that rural areas transformed into commercial and urban zones.
In the year 1780, green areas were leading in the town, especially on the southeast side woods covered a large territory. However, over the next 80 years, only one-third of the woods remained, and eventually, farmland was also replaced with a road and nearly halved. Another helpful change was the bridge that was built across the river while the village expanded and the amount of residential areas doubled.
In contrast, over the period of 140 years in 2000, the region was completely replaced with an urban area in which all trees were cut off and no green areas remained. The most noticeable change was the schools that replaced the woods on the southeast side of the town, where three sport fields were designated for the usage of children. What’s more, another road was reserved for local use, while a part of the river was converted into a wetland for birds. Further developments were the shops established alongside the river and increased housings with 500 residents in the village on the northeast side.
