The pictures illustrate the impact of the volcano eruption on the town in the Atlantic Ocean in May 1706.
Overall, before the disaster, there was a residential area with a seaport to the East, which handled 60 ships every month. After the volcanic eruption, however, the residential area of the town was the first to undergo the disaster, followed by the port, which was destroyed later because of the catastrophe. Of particular note is the castle which was the only site to remain undamaged.
Before the disaster, there was an ordinary town with some facilities. In detail, there was a castle in the heart of the town, to the west of which was located the town square. In the eastern-side, however, there was a port which handled 60 ships per month. In addition, the town was connected to America and Europe by sea.
Turning to the position of the volcano, it was located 8 km away from the town to the North.
The volcano eruption occurred on two dates, within an eight day interval. The first phase of lava flow started on 8th May 1706, engulfing the western-side of the town and destroying the residential area. After eight days (16th May 1706) the second phase of lava flow started, which completely covered the port. As a result, the town remained only with a castle.
