The maps illustrate the changes that took place in the town of Frenton over a period of twenty-two years (1990-2012). Overall, the town witnessed a dramatic transformation during this period, becoming noticeably less green and more modernised with the construction of new facilities, while some key features remained relatively unchanged.
In 1990, Frenton was a simpler city, with key features including the playing field with trees just above the hospital in the north. A school situated at the northwest corner, with a bank and library directly below it. Playing fields with trees occupied much of the northern central area. Meanwhile, houses stretched along the top-right side, and a café and park were located in the central area adjacent to the theatre. The shops could be found at the bottom right-hand corner of the town. There were also trees in the southwest corner, which could be accessed by the high street.
By 2012, the town had seen extensive development. The most noticeable changes include the replacement of the bank with the restaurant, and flats have been constructed in the northeast of the town. Another noticeable change is that the theatre, café and park turned into a cinema, a hotel and a golf course, respectively. The hospital in the city centre was enlarged, whereas the shops in the southeast were demolished to build a supermarket. Also, the bank and trees from 1990 disappeared, giving rise to a restaurant and technopark. On the east side of the town, houses are replaced by blocks of flats. The last development that occurred in the town is that playing fields with trees located at the top were removed to make room for the construction of blocks of flats. Despite these noticeable changes, the school and library remained unchanged.
