The maps illustrate the changes that took place in the town of Frenton between 1990 and 2012.
Overall, Frenton underwent significant urban development over the period, with many green and residential areas replaced by modern facilities, particularly housing, leisure, and commercial buildings. However, some key public services, such as the school, hospital, and library, remained in the same locations.
In 1990, the western side of Frenton was largely dominated by community and green spaces. A school and a bank were located in the north-west, while a hospital and a library stood nearby. There were also playing fields with trees and a large area of woodland in the south-west. To the east of High Street, the area consisted mainly of houses, alongside a café and park, as well as a theatre and several shops in the southern part.
By 2012, the town had become considerably more built-up. The playing fields and trees in the north-west were replaced by blocks of flats, while the bank was converted into a restaurant. On the eastern side of High Street, most of the houses were demolished to make way for further blocks of flats. In addition, the former café and park were transformed into a hotel and golf course, indicating a shift towards tourism and leisure. The theatre was replaced by a cinema, and the shops were redeveloped into a large supermarket. A new technopark was also constructed in the south-west, replacing the wooded area.
