The map illustrates how a town center has changed since 1990.
Overall, the area has become modernized and pedestrian-friendly with improved infrastructure and new facilities. Noticeable changes include the transformation of houses into apartments and the construction of a large shopping mall.
In 1990, the northern edge of the map included several buildings, such as a newsagent, a grocer’s, a bakery, a butcher, a cafe, and a childcare center, all arranged in an orderly manner. Meanwhile, two banks were situated on the northeastern and eastern sides. The center of the town consisted of a park, a library, and a town hall, located within an area bounded by four main streets – Smith, Oldfield, Green, and Newton streets. Several houses, however, occupied the southern side of the map, with a single house on the southeast corner.
Regarding the current layout, while the childcare center has remained unchanged, the former small retail units have been redeveloped as a large shopping mall. The former houses have been replaced by apartment blocks. Although the northeastern bank has been preserved, the second bank has been converted into a cafe. Smith Street has been pedestrianized, making the area more pedestrian-friendly. The town hall has now been connected to the cafe and apartment blocks via pedestrian crossings and walkways.
