In 2000, the southern part of the city was almost empty, having only one port. In contrast, nowadays there is a restaurant located in the south-west of Nelson city, also bars and clubs in the south-east. The road was transformed into a path for pedestrians. A new shop was built in a former place of the old market. Meanwhile, the new covered market was moved to the east from the city centre.

The city center is now incorporated with the bike rental business. The train station was moved between the university and the city centre. The university is currently connected with the city centre by tramline. The forest in the northeast was replaced with the shopping centre.
