The maps depict the significant transformations that took place in the town of Willington between 1980 and 2005.
Overall, the town transitioned from a predominantly natural landscape to a richly developed urban environment, characterized by the introduction of various facilities while witnessing the removal of some natural features and residential areas.
The most striking alteration is in the eastern part of the town, where all the trees that formerly lined the area were removed, along with the demolition of houses situated beside the railway. These spaces were replaced by modern skyscrapers designed to accommodate the rising demand for urban housing and business offices. Additionally, a large stadium was constructed near the northeastern edge of the lake, and a new railway extension was laid northward from the river to improve connectivity to surrounding districts and cities. At the river’s mouth, a marina was added, giving the coastline a more contemporary and developed appearance.
To the west, the previously green and low-density residential area underwent a noticeable transformation. Most of the woodland was cleared to make way for several new facilities, including a golf course, a sailing area, and a parking lot in the top-left corner. Despite these additions, several features such as the hospital, swimming area, and fishing zone remained intact. Notably, a large section of the original woodland was replaced by factories and warehouses, giving this area a more industrial character than it had previously.
