The image consists of three chronological maps illustrating a coastal settlement before, during, and after a disaster. The first diagram, titled "The town before eruption," labels an inland area with "Houses" (7 depicted) and a "Castle," alongside a curved inlet labeled "Port (60 ships per month)" containing 6 sailboats, with directional arrows pointing left to "America" and right to "Europe." The second diagram, titled "The volcanic eruption in 1706," shows an erupting "Volcano" with an arrow labeling "Lava flow" descending in two major paths toward the coastal settlement, with a double-ended arrow indicating a distance of "8 km." The third diagram, titled "The town after eruption," shows the altered landscape with the "1st lava flow" having buried the castle area leaving 5 visible houses, a "2nd lava flow" encroaching into the inlet, and an arrow pointing to the inlet labeled "Port (no ships)."

The maps give a comparison of an Atlantic Ocean town’s layout before and after a 1706 volcanic eruption.
Overall, the eruption greatly damaged and reshaped the town’s layout. The two lava flows destroyed the castle and several houses and led to the shutdown of the port.
Specifically, before the volcanic eruption in 1706, the town’s port was occupied by around 60 ships each month, travelling to America or Europe. On the left side of the port sit a residential area with a notable castle.
In 1706, a volcano located to the north of the town erupted, releasing two large flows of lava, one went towards the residential area while the other travelled 8 kilometers toward the port. A huge cloud of smoke was also released during this eruption.
After the disaster, the first flow of lava demolished several houses in the residential area as well as the nearby castle. A part of the destroyed castle was then replaced by residents’ houses. The second flow sit over the town’s port where no commercial ships could be found.
