The two maps illustrate several modifications that occurred to the city of Nelson in 2000 and the present time.
Overall, the town has became a more commercial and residential area compared to its past 25 years. While certain additions has taken place in and around the city centre, only the university and the port remained unchanged.
In 2000, there was quite a lot of unused spaces in eastern and southern parts. In the northern area, a univerity was constructed alongside a small garden, which was located to its eastern side. To the south of the city center, there was a road for cars in parallel to a port in south. Moreover, a train station was located in north of an old marke in the west.
By the recent time, the garden area has been replaced by a new shopping centre, whereas the location of the university next to it remaind unchanged. Meanwhile, the train station has been moved to up to the city centre, where now is used as a bike rental schme. Beside the station, a new trainline has been construced, which is connected to the city centre. In the left and right side of the city centre two new markets has taken place. Also, a restaurant and bars and clubs has builten in the southwest and southeast corners of the map, respectively.In addition, the car road is transformed to a walking way for pedestrains. Furthermore, a hall of residence was added to the northwest corner.
