The two maps illustrate the changes that have been placed in the city of Nelson between 2000 and the present day. Overall, the city did not undergo dramatic changes, however, it became more modern and better equipped with facilities, making it a more convenient place to live.
A clear comparison shows that most original features have either been replaced or repurposed. In the northeast part of the city the trees have been cut down and a new shopping centre occupied that area. The train station was retained, though it was relocated and reconstructed. Despite those redevelopments, some elements, such as the hall of residence, new shop, restaurants, bars and clubs have been added. Additionally, the old market was renovated and relocated into the east part. The street below the port was intended for cars but now it is for pedestrians only .
