The diagrams illustrate the structural and functional changes made to an Australia Zoo from 1960 to the present day.
Overall, the zoo has undergone significant transformations, characterized by the expansion of transport infrastructure and the redistribution of animal enclosures, while the southeastern section remained largely unchanged.
In 1960, the western section featured two separate enclosures of African and Australian animals, while the eastern side housed the enclosures of birds and chimpanzees, adjacent to the seal show. The green space and the picnic area were positioned in the southeastern corner, with the gift shop located southern. Meanwhile, the harbour was located in the northeastern corner.
By today, several major transformations were evident. The original enclosures of birds and chimpanzees were removed to accommodate the existing African animals, alongside the relocation further to the centre of the seal show. To the west, the former enclosure of African animals was converted into wild animals, while that of Australian animals remained untouched. Transport accessibility was significantly improved, with the introduction of the southern and northern entrances. Two new eastern cable cars were also constructed, and the flanked gift shop was markedly upgraded. Furthermore, the harbour was relocated to the northwest, with the addition of a northern ferry. Despite considerable redevelopment, the picnic area remained largely unaltered.
