The maps illustrate the changes that have taken place in an Australian zoo between 1960 and the present day.
Overall, the zoo has undergone significant redevelopment. The most notable changes include the introduction of new transport facilities, namely a ferry service and a cable car system, the addition of a second entrance, and the relocation of several animal enclosures. Meanwhile, the Australian animal area and the picnic area have remained unchanged.
In 1960, visitors entered the zoo via the harbour located in the northeast corner. The western part of the zoo was occupied by African and Australian animals, while the central area contained enclosures for birds and chimpanzees as well as a seal show. Immediately to the east of these attractions was a picnic area. A gift shop was situated in the southern part of the zoo.
At present, visitors can access the zoo either from the harbour entrance in the northeast or from a newly constructed entrance in the south. In addition, a ferry service and a cable car system have been introduced to improve accessibility. The African animal enclosure has been relocated to the centre of the zoo, while its former site has been converted into a wild animal area. The bird and chimpanzee enclosures have been removed, and the cable car route now runs to the west of the picnic area. By contrast, the Australian animal enclosure and the picnic area remain in their original locations, although the gift shop has been considerably enlarged.
