The plans illustrate the current layout of Southwest Airport and the changes that will be made after its redevelopment next year.
Overall, the airport is expected to undergo significant expansion and modernization. The number of gates will more than double, while several new facilities, including shops, a bag-drop area, an ATM, a sky train and a car-hire service, will be added to improve passengers’ convenience.
At present, departing passengers enter the airport through the departures area, where they pass through security and then check in. After that, they can access a simple rectangular walkway leading to eight gates. A café is located near the check-in area. On the arrivals side, passengers pass through passport control and customs before leaving the airport.
Following the redevelopment, the terminal building will become considerably larger. A bag-drop facility will be installed beside the check-in area in the departures section, while the café will be relocated closer to the entrance. In addition, a row of shops will be constructed between the main terminal and the boarding gates. On the arrivals side, new amenities such as an ATM and a car-hire service will be provided.
The most noticeable change will be the expansion of the gate area. The existing walkway will be replaced by a Y-shaped structure connected by a sky train, allowing access to 18 gates instead of the current eight. As a result, the airport will be able to accommodate a much larger number of passengers and flights.
