The line graph illustrates the trends in tourist arrivals to Malaysia and Dubai from 1995 to 2003.
Overall, there was a marked upward trajectory in the number of visitors to both destinations, with Dubai surpassing Malaysia towards the latter part of the period under consideration.
In 1995, Malaysia received approximately 80,000 tourists, significantly more than Dubai, which recorded just 50,000 visitors. Over the following years, both countries experienced substantial growth. By 1998, Malaysia’s tourist figures had risen to around 190,000, while Dubai showcased a more pronounced increase, approaching 200,000. The year 2000 marked a pivotal point, as Malaysia’s numbers continued to climb steadily, reaching 250,000, whereas Dubai saw a remarkable increase to 300,000 visitors in 2002, marking the start of its ascendancy in popularity.
From 1999 onward, while Malaysia’s upward trajectory persisted, it peaked at 275,000 in 2001 before entering a gradual decline to approximately 325,000 by 2003. Conversely, Dubai exhibited a dramatic rise, culminating in nearly 450,000 visitors in 2003, thereby establishing itself as the more popular destination by the end of the period analyzed. Notably, in 2002, despite a slight dip in visitor numbers to 400,000, Dubai’s overall growth trend remained evident, culminating in it overtaking Malaysia’s figures in the final year.
