The number of car thefts was 0,4% in 1970, after which it experienced a dramatic rise to reach a peak of 1,4% in 1985. A similar change, but to a lesser extent, can be seen in the figure for house burglary, which grew from roughly 0,3% to around 0,55 by 1985. Meanwhile, the number of street robbery fluctuated in the range of 3,3% between 1970 and 1985.
Around 12% of car theft happened in England and whales, with a subsequent progressive decrease and a final drop to 0,8% in 2000. Similarly, the figure for house burglary continued to rise, reaching 0,6% in 1990, before declining to 0,4% in 2000. Finally, the figure for street robbery leveled off at about 0,3% toward the end of the period.
