The pie charts illustrate the distribution of primary school class sizes in four Australian states in 2010.
Overall, the majority of classes in all four states contained between 21 and 25 students, while classes with 30 or more pupils made up the smallest proportions.
In New South Wales, 37% of classes had 21-25 students and 33% had 26-30, making these two categories dominant. South Australia showed a similar pattern, with 33% in the 21-25 range and 28% in the 26-30 range. In both states, only 4% of classes contained 30 or more students, whereas around one-third had 20 or fewer learners.
In contrast, the Australian Capital Territory recorded the highest share of medium-sized classes: 51% of classes had 21-25 students and 27% had 26-30. Western Australia followed a similar pattern, with 42% and 27% in these ranges respectively. Larger classes of 30 or more were rare, accounting for just 1% in the Capital and 5% in Western Australia.
Overall, medium-sized classes (21-25 pupils) were the most common across all states, while very large classes were least common.
