The image displays a pie chart and a table about land degradation, along with the text 'The pie chart shows the main reason why agricultural land becomes less productive.' The pie chart, titled 'Causes of Worldwide Land Degradation', shows the following breakdown: over-grazing 35%, deforestation 30%, over-cultivation 28%, and other 7%. The table, titled 'Causes of Land Degradation by region', shows columns for Region, deforestation, over-cultivation, over-grazing, and Total land degraded. For North America, the values are 0.2, 3.3, 1.5, and 5% respectively. For Europe, the values are 9.8, 7.7, 5.5, and 23% respectively. For Oceania*, the values are 1.7, 0, 11.3, and 13% respectively. The given chart provided major factors which caused worldwide land degradation such as over-grazing, deforestation and over-cultivation. The table presented data on how three regions contributed to land degradation in the 1990s.
Overall, from the pie chart it can be seen that there is almost equal distribution among main causes. From the table it is noticeable that Europe had the highest percentage of total land degradation among counterparts.
All of the causes of land degradation was around one-third. Over-cultivation was the least cause of land degradation, with 28%. Whereas, deforestation ranked second place at exactly 30%. Over-grazing was the main cause of the degradation process accounting for over one-third, at 35%.
Moreover, Europe had the lead in the total percentage of degraded land with 23%, being closely followed by Oceania with 13% respectively. One exception was over-cultivation that had never taken place in Oceania, which means 0 %. Over-grazing was the most contributing factor to total degraded land in Oceania. In contrast, North America was the least contributed region than other regions with a tiny 5%.
