The pie chart shows four main reasons why land is degrading worldwide, while the table shows the causes of land degradation across three regions: North America, Europe and Oceania, measured in percentages.
Overall, it’s evident that overgrazing caused by far the largest percentage of global land degradation in the world. Additionally, Europe experienced the highest proportion of land degradation among three regions.
Looking at the pie chart, overgrazing made up nearly a third of global land degradation, which was 35%. This was followed by deforestation and overcultivation, accounting for the respective figures with 30% and 28%. In contrast, other causes contributed a mere 7%.
Focusing on regional data, Oceania experienced the largest percentage of land degradation due to overgrazing, with 11.3%, while Europe and North America caused it 5.5% and 1.5% of overgrazing respectively. Notably, Oceania had no effect on overcultivation, while the figure for Europe accounted for 7.7%, and North America reported 3.3% from this cause. In terms of deforestation, it was the primary cause for land degradation in Europe, with making up 9.8% there. The figure for Oceania was 1.7%, and North America contributed merely 0.2% Europe had the highest overall proportion of degraded land at 23 percent, followed by Oceania at 13 percent. By contrast, North America recorded the lowest figure at a mere 5 percent.
