The pie graph provides information about the sales rate of five types of books which were sold by a bookseller from 1972 to 2012.
Overall, there were upward trends in adult fiction and children’s fiction, while the reverse was true for biography, travel and other categories. In addition, adult fiction was likely to be the highest figure, while biography was generally the lowest throughout the period.
Regarding genres with rising trends, a dramatic increase was seen in fiction for adults over the period, growing two times larger (from 20% to 45%) and strikingly exceeding unnamed books to dominate the chart in the last year. This kind of book for children almost exactly mirrored adult fiction’s rising trend, although it remained at a relatively lower level in comparison to that for adults ( with a growth of only 5% over the course of 40 years).
Concerning the declining trends, the proportion of biography books stood at 20%, after which it went down to 8% at the end of the period. Unspecified books saw similar changes, decreasing from 25% to 12% over a course of 40-year period between 1972 and 2012. Meanwhile, the data for travel books underwent the fluctuation, initially rising 3% over the course of two decades before significantly falling to 10% in 2012.
