The chart illustrates the proportion of five different types of books, including travel, biography, children’s fiction, adult fiction and others that were sold by a bookseller from 1972 to 2012.
Overall, it is clear an upward trend was seen in the percentage of fictional types sold by a store, while there was a contrast in biography and others. In addition, travel books experienced a fluctuation during this time and adult fiction was the best-selling genre in the end of this period.
Looking first at fictional kinds, the percentage of adult fiction was as high as that of children’s fiction in 1972, with 20%. After 20 years, the corresponding figure for both fictional types were 25% and 22%. In 2012, with 45%, the proportion of adult fiction purchased by customers outstripped that of children’s fiction in the bookseller, wit 25%. Moreover, adult fiction was the best-selling genre in the bookseller between 1992 to 2012.
Turning to the other categories, there was a slight drop from 20% to 15% in the percentage of biography, while the proportion of travel grew mildly from 15% to 18% between 1972 and 1992. Besides, the percentage of others books captured the highest point in 1972, at 25% before falling to 20% in 1992 and 12% in 2012. At the same time, the corresponding figures for biography and travel witnessed a slight decrease from 15% to 8% and 18% to 10%.
