The given pie charts demonstrate the proportions of five genres of books in terms of their sales from a bookseller in three different years.
Overall, while the ratio of adult fiction sold was by far the most popular genre throughout, the opposite was true in the case of biography sold in the same period. Notably, the sales of five types retailed between 1972 and 1992 were relatively balanced, whereas a significant disparity can be observed in the figures from 2012 onwards.
In 1972, other kinds of books accounted for the largest proportion, at 25%. It was followed by the figures for adult fiction, children’s fiction and biography, which were all 20%. The smallest segment was represented by travel books, at 15%. By 1992, there were minimal changes in the percentages of all five genres, with each fluctuating between 2% and 5%.
In 2012, the sales of adult fiction comprised 45%, making it become the best-selling genre. This number nearly doubled the percentage of children’s fiction, which stood at 25%. Meanwhile, three remaining types including travel, biography and others were approximately equivalent, making up 10%, 8% and 12%, respectively.
