The two pie charts illustrate the percentage of various types of energy used in Australia in 2008 and projected for 2030.
Overall, although oil, gas, and coal will remain the dominant energy sources in both years, their total share is anticipated to decline slightly. In contrast, the percentage of geothermal, wind, and hydro energy is expected to experience minor growth, indicating a shift from fossil fuels towards renewable energy.
In 2008, coal was the primary source of energy, accounting for 39%, followed by oil at 32.5% and gas at 22.9%. Solar, wind, and hydro energy made up minimal shares, at 0.8%, 0.3%, and 0.2%, respectively, and other types of energy constituted the remaining 4.3%.
By 2030, oil is expected to overtake coal as the largest contributor, providing 35.5% of energy. Likewise, the proportion of gas is projected to increase considerably, surging to 32%. In contrast, the percentage of coal will drop dramatically to only 22.3%, despite its dominance in 2008. In addition, 4.3% of energy will be provided by a new source, geothermal energy, while the percentage of wind and hydro will increase slightly, reaching 0.9% and 0.7%, respectively. The share of other energy sources will remain unchanged at 4.3%.
