IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: Sample Report (Band 8+)
The pie charts illustrate the changes in the popularity of five different social media platforms over a three-year period from 2011 to 2013.
Overall, it is clear that while Facebook remained the most preferred social media channel throughout the period, its dominance experienced a significant decline. In contrast, all other platforms – Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and Pinterest – saw a steady increase in their respective shares of user preference.
In 2011, Facebook was the predominant leader, captured by nearly three-fifths of the total (59%). However, this figure dropped notably to 49% in 2012 and continued its downward trajectory to reach 38% by 2013. Despite this sharp decrease of 21 percentage points over the two years, it still held the largest share of the market.
Conversely, the other social media platforms followed an upward trend. Twitter, the second most popular site, grew modestly from 21% in 2011 to 25% in 2013. Google+ witnessed the most substantial relative growth, with its figures nearly tripling from a mere 5% to 14% over the period. Similarly, LinkedIn’s share rose from 10% to 15%, while Pinterest, starting as the least popular at 5%, saw its usage climb slightly to 8% by the end of 2013.
