The pie charts illustrate the proportion of new cars sold in Australia in three different years: 1984, 2004 and 2013.
Overall, sedans accounted for the largest share of new car sales in all three years, although their proportion declined considerably over the period. In contrast, the percentage of SUVs and other types of cars increased.
In 1984, sedans represented 74% of all new car sales, making them by far the most popular type. SUVs accounted for only 2%, while other types made up the remaining 24%. By 2004, the proportion of sedans had fallen to 62%, while SUV sales increased substantially to 17%. The share of other vehicles also decreased slightly to 21%.
A similar trend continued in 2013. Sedans still had the largest share, but their proportion dropped further to 51%. Meanwhile, SUVs accounted for 17%, remaining unchanged from 2004. The percentage of other types of vehicles rose significantly to 32%, becoming the second-largest category.
Overall, the figures show a gradual shift away from sedans towards SUVs and other types of vehicles over the period shown.
