The pie charts illustrate the proportions of new cars sold in Australia across three categories (Sedans, SUVs and Others) in 1994, 2004 and 2013. The total number of cars sold is also provided for each year.
Overall, Sedans remained the most popular type of car throughout the period, despite a gradual decline in their market share. In contrast, SUVs and the Others category generally increased their proportions, with Others experiencing the most significant growth.
In 1994, Sedans accounted for the largest share of new car sales, representing 74% of the market, or approximately 31,700 vehicles. However, this figure declined steadily over the following years, falling to 62% in 2004 and further decreasing to 51% in 2013. Despite this reduction, Sedans continued to dominate the Australian car market.
By comparison, SUVs represented only 7% of total sales in 1994, making them the least popular category at that time. Their share rose significantly to 17% in 2004 and remained unchanged in 2013. Meanwhile, the Others category showed the greatest increase, climbing from 19% in 1994 to 21% in 2004 before reaching 32% in 2013, becoming the second-largest category by the end of the period.
