The pie charts illustrate the online shopping sales for four different retail sectors – travel, film and music, books, and clothes – in New Zealand in 2003 and 2013.
Overall, film or music and books sections expanded substantially over the period, albeit at varying degrees, whereas the reverse was true for travel and clothes sectors. Of a particular note is that travel section accounted for the largest proportion of online shopping sales, though it ranked second eventually.
In 2003, travel section was the dominant category, constituting roughly one-third of online shopping sales. Clothes sector ranked second, accounting for 24%, while film or music section stood at 21%. By contrast, books category made up 19%, making it the least popular category.
By the end of the period, the pattern showed almost the reverse. The proportion of online shopping sales on film and music rose sharply to 33%, overtaking all other sectors to become the dominant caategory in the chart, while books sector experienced only a marginal rise of 3 percentage points, finishing at 22%. By contrast, both travel and clothes categories declined drammatically, standing at 29% and 16% respectively.
