Overall, computer games are by far the most popular activity among boys, whereas dancing ranks first among girls. In contrast, reading is the least preferred activity for boys, while listening to music is the least popular among girls. Some activities are shared by both genders, while others are clearly gender-specific.
Among boys, computer games account for the largest proportion at 36%. Basketball is the second most popular activity, representing 26%, followed by soccer at 17%. Skateboarding and listening to music make up 11% and 10% respectively. By comparison, reading is significantly less popular, at just 2%.
For girls, dancing constitutes the highest percentage, at 27%. Reading is the second most common activity, accounting for 21%, while computer games represent 16%. Netball makes up 15%, and gymnastics stands at 11%. Listening to music is the least popular activity among girls, at 10%.
Notably, listening to music attracts an identical proportion of boys and girls (10%), whereas reading is considerably more popular among girls than boys.
