The maps depict the comparison in the layout of two distinct two-storey Japanese houses in two contrasting styles: modernity and tradition.
Overall, the most significant shift is the modernization on level two, whilst the downstairs is predominantly a rearrangement. Additionally, there are some new dedicated spaces in the second design.Nevertheless, the modern one still holds some old-fashioned features which consist of the slide door, tatami (a type of straw mat) flooring, futons (thin mattress) which would be unfolded in night-time.
Regarding the first floor, the entrance is located at the bottom left corner which is one of the unique equivalents among two designs, together with a topward staircase next to the middle of the left section. In the first plan, the traditional room 1 with a cupboard containing a futon is situated along the top side, whereas a kitchen room and a bathroom face the stairs and the front door, with their respective position. According to the modern blueprint, the classic room has been rotated horizontally and has a right angle with the former wall. The new open kitchen is placed where the previous planned bathroom is. Lastly, there is dining or living in the upper right.
Concerning the upstairs, the traditional room 2 is in a similar location with the number 1, having been bisected and converted to bed room numbered 2 and 3. In the later illustration, the largest traditional room on the middle-left side is shifted to two separate bathrooms with a smaller room in the bottom-right corner that has a door connected to the main bedroom, while the other is double in size, leading to a corridor in the center.
