The diagrams compare the present layout of Southwest Airport with the planned redevelopment that is expected to be completed next year.
Overall, the airport is set to experience a substantial transformation. The number of gates will increase significantly, the current straight walkway will be replaced by a Y-shaped pier, and several new passenger facilities will be introduced, while the security, passport control, and customs areas will remain in their existing locations.
At present, Southwest Airport has a relatively simple design. The terminal is divided into departures and arrivals, with security and passport control on the departures side and passport control together with customs on the arrivals side. There is one check-in area and a café in the terminal. A single walkway extends from the terminal to eight boarding gates.
After redevelopment, the airport will become much larger and more modern. The existing walkway will be expanded into a Y-shaped pier, increasing the total number of gates from 8 to 18. In addition, a sky train will be installed along the central section of the pier to transport passengers. The terminal will also be upgraded with a bag-drop facility, shops, an ATM, and a car hire service. Although the café will remain, it will be relocated within the terminal.
