The diagrams illustrate the changes made to the South Wing of the Walton Museum between 2008 and 2012 following a redevelopment project.
Overall, the layout of the South Wing was significantly modernized and expanded, with several new facilities added such as a restaurant, a children’s play area, and a lift. Some areas were relocated or combined, enhancing the functionality of the space.
In 2008, the South Wing featured six main areas, including a reception area, a shop, a reading room, a cloaks room, and a special exhibition room. The reception and cloak room were located on the upper right side, while a staircase was positioned centrally. The shop and the special exhibition room occupied the left side of the wing.
By 2012, several major changes had been implemented. The reception and cloak room were merged into a single space and moved to the previous shop area. A lift replaced the stairs and connected four newly added rooms arranged vertically: an exhibition room, a self-service room, the reading room, and a children’s play area. Meanwhile, a restaurant and terrace were added above the reception area, and the entrance was transformed into a proper entrance hall. The shop and the special exhibition room remained in their original positions.
