The line graph represents the proportion of crime in England and Wales between 1970 and 2005. Overall, the rate of all crime types incresed, albeit to varying degrees and in different pattern. The most pronounced rise occured in car theft, which overtook house burgling as a primary means. Notably, street robbery happened significantly less throughout the period, both following a somewhat similar pattern of growth.
The thefts relied heavily on cars to rob, with about 0.4 million incidents occured in 1970. Then, it surged to a peak of 1.6 million in 1995, becoming the most prevalent method. However, car exhibited a remarkable decline in 2005, at 1 million, surpassing the all the remain categories.
While house burgling rates recorded dramatic rise until 1995, street robbery remained stagnant within 20 years, at 0.20 and around 0.04 million. Despite this, the latter increased, 0.2 million in 2000 and remained unchanged in figures in 2005. Moreover, the former began to decrease, from 0.7 in 1995 to 0.5 million in 2005.
