Overall, the number of students increased significantly over the period. In addition, the percentage of female students increased, while the proportion of local students decreased and more students came from overseas.
In terms of enrolment, the number of new students was 327 in 1937, which increased to 1133 in 1967 and rose dramatically to 6254 in 2017. Furthermore, the percentage of female students was 45% in 1937, which decreased to 35% in 1967, but then increased to 55% in 2017. Meanwhile, male students showed the opposite trend, rising from 55% to 65% and then falling to 45%.
On the other hand, the percentage of students coming from within 40 miles of Manchester was 55% in 1937, which dropped significantly to 15% in 1967 and further declined to around 1-2% in 2017. However, the percentage of overseas students increased from 6% to 7% and then rose sharply to 32%. In addition, the number of countries students came from increased from 4 to 26 and then to 102 countries.
