The table compares the proportions of citizens aged 65 and above in three different countries, namely Canada, Germany and the UK and provides some predictions about their trends between 1980 and 2030.
Overall, all three nations showed an upward trend with Germany maintaining its leading position throughout the period. In 2030, the share of residents aged 65 and above in Canada is expected to overtake that of the UK.
In 1980, Germany stood out with the highest percentage of seniors aged 65 and above at 15.51%, closely followed by the UK with 14.87%, whereas that of Canada was significantly lower at just shy of 9.51%. In the next 20 years, it is noticeable that Canada recorded a remarkable increase in the proportion of elderly citizens to reach the same figure as the UK at 14.61%, while the figure for Germany consistently rose to 20.35%.
In 2030, it is projected that Germany will retain its top spot with the share of 65 and above cohort standing at 25.82%. In contrast, although starting with the lowest figure, Canada is predicted to surpass the UK in the percentage of individuals aged 65 and over with 22.39% and 19.24% respectively.
