The table compares the percentage of consumer expenditure in Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Turkey on three categories of goods in 2002.
Overall, it is evident that food, drinks and tobacco accounted for the largest proportion of spending in all five countries, whereas leisure and education received the smallest share. It is also noticeable that Turkey generally recorded higher expenditure levels than the other countries.
Looking at the details, in terms of food, drinks and tobacco, Turkey allocated the highest percentage at 32.14%, followed by Ireland at 28.91%. By contrast, Sweden spent the least on this category, at 15.77%, while Spain and Italy reported similar figures of 18.80% and 16.36% respectively.
Spending leisure and education was comparatively low in every country, remaining below 5%. Turkey again ranked highest in this category, at 4.35%, which was more than double Spain’s figure of 1.98%.
Expenditure on clothing and footwear showed moderate variations, ranging from 9% in Italy to 5.40% in Sweden. The remaining countries spent approximately 6-7% on these items.
