The table illustrates the number of Australian citizens that travelled to the seven most well-known destinations between the years 1999 and 2009.
Overall, New Zealand had the highest number of visitors in both years, with the numbers having increased by double, which makes it the most popular destination for Australians. While China was the least popular country in 1999, the number of visitors increased by almost quadruple, which makes it the fifth most popular country in 2009.
In 1999, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States were the most popular destinations for Australians, with the number of visitors being 500,000, 400,000, and 300,000 respectively. Indonesia, Fiji, Japan, and China were less popular, especially China, being the least with only 86,000 visitors.
In 2009, New Zealand remained the most desirable destination with a growth rate of 113%. The United Kingdom and the United States also remained in second and third place, despite the growth rate being the lowest at 60% and 33% respectively. China had the highest growth rate of all with a massive 249%, leading to 300,000 visitors by 2009, which made it the fifth most visited country by Australian citizens after being the least known destination.
