In 1998, 36.5 million passengers used Gatwick transport. This number rose gradually during the initial five years before soaring from 51.1 million in 2002 to 69.3 million in 2003. A roughly similar trend was seen in the number of people using Stansted transport, where it jumped from 17.3 million to a peak of 43.3 million in the first four years of the period, followed by a stable trend between 2001 and 2003.
27.2 million people were served by Heathrow transport at the beginning of the surveyed period. There was a sharp rise of 21 million in 2000 before keeping in a slow decrease to just 33,2 million in 2002, after which a higher number of travelers used it than other airports. In the last year of the period, this number increased to 45.6 million.
