The table presents information on the number of medals achieved by the top ten nations at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.
Among ten countries, the US dominated the competition with leading statistics in all categories except bronze. It should also be noted that according to the rules of Olympic medal counts, gold medals are more valuable than other criteria, which is why nations such as South Korea and Hungary feature in the top ten despite having the fewest medals.
The US, China and Great Britain are the tournament’s most accomplished countries. The American athletes are the most successful with 104 medals won in total, out of which 46 were gold. This country is also notably the only one with over 100 medals. In comparison, Chinese sportspeople won 88 medals overall and 38 gold, placing them above Great Britain, a country that won only 65 medals in total but 29 of the highest value.
The remaining nations in the list are mostly European, with Russia ranked fourth as it brought home 24 gold medals and 82 in total. The latter is an impressive figure considering South Korea (ranked 5th) only won 28 medals in general, but this same country achieved 13 gold medals, a feat that was enough to overtake 5 other countries. Nations ranked 6-9 are all from Europe, with Hungary having the least medals won in general (17). However, Hungarian athletes won one more gold than their Australian competitors, which is why the latter nation ranks 10th.
