The table below illustrates average calorie intake in the USA over a 40-year period, from 1970 to 2010. Overall, the number of calorie consumption for most food categories increased over a period of time, except for vegetables and dairy products that had a slight decline. In addition, it is noticeable that the total calorie intake was the highest in 2010,whereas the lowest was in 1970. +
Regarding 1970, the top of the list were meat,eggs, nuts at 465 calories and grains at 430 calories, just ahead of added sugar at 410 and added fat at 400 calories. In contrast, the bottom of the list were fruits, accounting for 70 calories.
Turning to 1990, there was a significant rise in consumption of grains from 430 to 575 calories. Added fat and added sugar also uplifted moderately to 460 and 445 calories. However, dairy products experienced a negligible drop from 265 to 260 calories, while vegetables remained stable at 125 calories.
In 2010, added rose dramatically to 640 calories,representing the biggest increase overall. Grains also increased steadily to 625 calories, as opposed to dairy products and vegetables, which decreased marginally to 255 and 120 calories. As a result, the total calorie intake reached its peak at 2665 calories in 2010.
