The chart illustrates the world’s top 200 universities in biology, medicine and psychology in five different countries in 2011.
Overall, it is clear that the USA and the UK had the largest numbers of universities ranked among the world’s top 200 across three fields, while New Zealand had by far the fewest universities represented in the ranking. Moreover, the number of medical and psychological colleges in the top 200 in Australia and Canada was greater than that of biology.
To begin with, in 2011, the USA ranked first in all three fields, with 69 universities in biology, 54 in medicine and 58 in psychology, double the figures for UK universities in each sector with 30, 24 and 29, respectively. In contrast, New Zealand had a much smaller presence in the top 200, contributing to the ranking only 6 in biology, 2 in medicine and 4 in psychology.
However, the concentration on biological education in Australia and Canada was identical with 9 universities in the top 200. A similar pattern can be seen in medicine and psychology, with both countries having higher figures in these two fields. Australia contributed 13 medical and 17 psychological subjects, compared with 12 and 14 respectively in Canada.
