The table illustrates the proportion of energy produced from five renewable resources – hydropower, solar energy, tidal power, geothermal, and wind power – in the UK and the number of employees in 2009.
Overall, hydropower accounted for the highest proportion of energy among the five renewable sources, but it had the lowest number of employees. In contrast, solar energy recorded the lowest share of energy production, yet employed the largest number of workers.
Hydropower was the biggest percentage of energy production in 2009, at 13,7%. 10,2% of energy was produced by wind power. Geothermal and tidal power recorded relatively similar proportions and they were 6,9% and 6,8%, respectively. Solar energy showed the lowest proportion of energy production, at 3,6%.
Regarding employment, solar energy had the highest workforce, with 12,450 employees. There were 4,590 workers in geothermal sector. Tidal power ranked third with 2,034 employees. Wind power and hydropower had the lowest workers, 1,198 and 1,013 employees, respectively.
