The tables illustrate the number of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas were sold in 1999 and 2004 in five countries namely UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden.
Overall, what stands out from tables is that coffee sales rose in all countries with highest alteration observed in the UK over the period in question. Banana consumption also increased in all but except two countries and were highest in the UK.
At first sight, it is evident that in 1999, the greatest sales , 3 million euros were seen in Switzerland , followed by Denmark and UK (1.8m, 1.5m , respectively). Belgium and Sweden had the lowest coffee sales among 6 countries, 1m and 0.8 m, respectively. 5 years later, in 2004 the figure for the UK surge dramatically to reach 20m, while trends of Denmark and Sweden increased slightly to 2m and 1m, respectively. There was twofold growth in sales in Switzerland (6m), while the figure for Belgium experienced a gradual rise.
In terms of banana sales, the highest consumption in both years were in the UK, booming from 15m in 1999 to 47m in 2004. The figures for Belgium (1.8m) and Sweden (2m) witnessed a fall , reaching 1m and 0.9m, respectively. The sales of Switzerland (1m) were more than those of Denmark (0.6m) in 1999, both soared considerably, reaching 5.5 m and 4m.
