The tables compare the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in five European countries in 1999 and 2004.
Overall, all countries experienced growth in coffee sales over the five-year period, with the UK showing by far the most dramatic increase. For bananas, sales rose significantly in Switzerland, the UK and Belgium, while Sweden and Denmark saw declines.
In terms of coffee, the UK had the greatest rise, jumping from 1.5 million euros in 1999 to 20 million euros in 2004. Switzerland was the second-largest market, increasing from 3 to 6 million euros. Denmark and Belgium showed more modest growth, rising from 1.8 to 2 million and from 1 to 1.7 million euros respectively. Sweden recorded the smallest increase, moving from 0.8 to 1 million euros.
For bananas, Switzerland remained the largest consumer in both years, and its sales rose sharply from 15 million euros to 47 million euros. The UK also showed a notable increase, from 1 to 5.5 million euros. Belgium followed a similar upward trend, reaching 4 million euros in 2004. In contrast, Sweden’s banana sales fell from 1.8 to 1 million euros, and Denmark’s figures dipped from 2 to 0.9 million euros.
